Welcome to the new Rotary year – 2020-2021

Little did we know when we left PETS (President Elect Training Seminar) in March that we would not be meeting in person for at least 3 to 4 months. That being said, we truly are seeing that Rotary Opens Opportunities which is our new theme for this year. Some of you were in attendance on June 8 when our then Rotary President-Elect Holger Knaack spoke to our Zone 33/34 Monday Noon Zoom Call. He is now our Rotary International President in a year that poses many opportunities as well as some challenges. I was delighted that now Rotary President Holger installed our 31-person 2020-2021 DG class in the two Zones on Zoom. We had over 500 people on the biggest Zoom call I have ever attended.  What an honor that is! It was a Rotary First and we were a part of it.

At the International Assemble in San Diego, when President Holger announced our theme in January, he asked us as District Governors to take four important ideas to the clubs. He reiterated those four things on the June 8th Zoom Call.

  1. The district will be actively at work creating new, innovative club models and will need your support. In addition, you can also help us expand our reach by creating a satellite club and/or forming a community-based Rotaract Club.
  2. Every club should host at least one strategic meeting each year during which you ask: What should our club be like in five years and what steps should we take to help achieve that vison? What value do we bring our members? Select someone to lead that effort.
  3. Select new members carefully. Make sure they are a good fit with your club and that your club meets their expectations. Engage them and take care of them. There is no wrong age to become a Rotarian.
  4. Continue your club’s efforts to end polio by donating to End Polio Now and by hosting a World Polio Day event in October. We must fulfill the promise that we made to the children of the world.

I am so proud of all our clubs that have remained active during the pandemic. Rotarians are engaged with Zoom Calls, Service Projects, District Grants, and caring for our members and for others who need help. We are truly people of action. So, let’s do it!  Let’s embrace the new Rotary Year by maintaining our Rotary Values and Goals.  Thanks for all you do for Rotary!  Let’s make it a great year!
